Transitional Dentures

To avoid being without teeth when having several teeth extracted, you can have a temporary denture fabricated. This treatment involves having impressions taken of your mouth prior to having your teeth removed and may involve a few fittings. When your natural teeth are extracted your Dentist or Oral Surgeon can then place your transitional denture immediately in your mouth. This acts as a bandage, prevents you from having to go without teeth and provides you with something to chew with during the healing
process.

It is very important to follow the postoperative instructions of both your Denturist and Oral Surgeon during your healing process.

The healing process takes approximately 3 months and during this time your tissues and bone change so, you may require adjustments and temporary liners or tissue conditioners to maintain comfort and the best possible fit during this time.

Our office recommends having a new permanent set of dentures made when the process is complete to ensure that you have a comfortable proper fitting set of dentures. The temporary denture then becomes a spare set of dentures.

VELscope and oral cancer detection

We’ve recently started using VELscope in our practice. This is a tool that helps dental professionals to find oral abnormalities including oral cancer; that would not normally be visible to the naked eye.  VELscope uses a blue LED light that causes the healthy tissues in the mouth to fluorese green upon exposure; unhealthy tissue appears dark.  Found early, oral cancer’s 5 year survival rate is good: approx. 83%; if found late, oral cancer’s 5 year survival rate is poor: approx. 32%.  Therefore finding disease earlier is the key to survival.

Risk factors of oral cancer include but are not limited to: {Factors you can control} Tabacco use (including chewing tabacco), Excessive alcohol consumption, the combined use of tabacco and alcohol, excessive unprotected exposure to the sun, low intake of fruits and vegetables. use of betel nut and bedis.  {Factors out of your control}: Age, HPV16 viral infection, race, ethnicity and economics, recurrence, gender.

Signs and Symptoms:  {Early indicators} Red and or white discolorations of the soft tissues of the mouth, any sore which does not heal within 14 days and Hoarseness which lasts for prolonged period of time. {Advanced indicators}: A sensation that something is stuck in your throat, numbness in the oral region, difficulty in moving the jaw or tongue, difficulty swallowing, ear pain which occurs on one side only, a sore under a denture, which even after adjustment of the denture, still does not heal, a lump or thickening which develops in the mouth or on the neck.

Screening only takes a few minutes out of your day and could add years to your life.  We are proud to offer this service to our patients and recommend a screening 1-2 times per year.

We have found that people who are complete denture wearers tend to not realize that they still require regular oral examinations of both their dentures and oral cavity.  If you have not been to see a dental professional in over a year please call your dental provider (dentist/denturist) for an examination; if you do not have one please contact us we would be happy to help you 905-459-7442.

Tooth Whitening

Our office is super excited about our new virtually sensitivity free whitening system called Spa Dent.  When we first heard about the product we were quite skeptical as to whether it really was sensitivity free; this was due to having tried other products that made the same claim yet caused major sensitivity.  So we called in Spa Dent to try it out; three of our staff tried it and only one had very minor to almost no sensitivity.  The best part was we all saw our teeth whiten 2 shades in 20 minutes.

The other thing we love about this product is its ease of use our level II dental assistant can apply it; freeing up the time for our denturists.  (This product does not require a prescription)

It is great because we now can offer our partial denture patients the opportunity to lighten their teeth in our practice prior to the start of their new dentures.

If you have any questions regarding this product please feel free to contact us; we would be happy to answer any questions you have 905-459-7442.
